For the first time since their inception in 1976, the Rolex Spirit of Enterprise awards this year feature more female prize winners than male.

Marking three decades since the inception of its international awards programme, Rolex named the winners of the 12th Rolex Awards for Enterprise. The Laureates – three women and two men – hail from Australia, France, India, Thailand and the United Kingdom. They join the 55 Laureates who, since 1976, have been singled out by the watchmaker for their innovative projects to change the world and make it a better place to live.

On October 25, each Laureate has received US$100,000 and a personally inscribed gold Rolex chronometer at a ceremony at the Esplanade Performing Arts Centre in Singapore. The five winners – selected by an independent panel of experts from nearly 1,700 applicants from 117 countries – have been recognized for their contributions to science, technology, the environment, exploration and cultural heritage.

The new Laureates are: Alexandra Lavrillier, a French ethnologist establishing a mobile school to preserve Siberian nomads’ cultural heritage; Brad Norman, an Australian environmentalist implementing a global photo-identification database for whale shark conservation; Pilai Poonswad, a Thai microbiology professor saving hornbills threatened by poaching and deforestation in southern Thailand; Chanda Shroff, an Indian woman setting up a mobile resource centre to showcase Kutchi embroidery and teach a new generation of artisans about this tradition; and Rory Wilson, a British zoologist testing a revolutionary energy-expenditure measuring device to help conserve wildlife.

Today, Rolex still believes in this philosophy. This is the reason it takes a year to produce a gold Rolex chronometer, and the company is responsible for 25% of total Swiss exports which are marketed around the world. This is also a reason why Rolex has the reputation which became the best known wristwatch company in the world.

It was specifically chosen because it was short enough to be written on a watch dial, and was easily said. Wilsdorf did not anticipate the battle he would be forced to fight for the name Rolex, and not that of the supplier, appear on his watches. Rolex also bore the names X/L, W/D, Marcone, Unicorn, Genex, Oyster, Tudor, and Rolco.

Rolex has had many innovations that have turned into standards of watch making. The diving model, two time zone, date in the dial, self winding and waterproof case are examples. The Company itself is unique in that it is privately held but run by a trust that donates all profits to charity. They are able to plan long term with little pressure to create day by day profit. This allows Rolex great leeway in planning their sales and marleting campaigns.

All of the movements were forced to undergo another battery of tests over a week’s period before he would be accepted by Rolex. Any issue or irregularity whatsoever, and they had been returned to the workshops. The movements were cased in traditional Swiss style and provided with bracelets and crystals, once they were accepted. Rolex itself seemed to be setting the industry standards through its constant efforts at improving those standards.

The wristwatch was proved to be the most popular among the sporting gentlemen of England. Parts that came to Wilsdorf had all been originated in different places. Until then, it was the custom for a retailers name to appear on the dial and the movement. But Wilsdorf had realized that his name would be very good in noticing his watches from his competitors, which was inferior in his mind, since they did not have to undergo the tests that he had to himself. By 1908, the name Rolex was invented.

In 2000 Rolex ended the production of the DAYTONA El Primero after 13 years.
By developing its own chronograph movement, ROLEX became responsible for 100% of production.
Rolex producing the new reference 116520 in stainless steel is a real event in the world of watch making.
There are of course the pros and cons.ODaytonather than the new movement, the new DAYTONA maintains continuity, though completely reworked.
The second hand at 6 o’clock instead of 9 o’clock, a different shape and polishing, new generation bracelet and a perfect balance, all make the 116520 a very successful timepiece.

A change in policy two years ago has made all Rolex models with lug holes worthless. In fact all models with lug holes that are sent to Rolex for repair will be taken back and replaced with a new model at full price and 20%. The only good thing is that they will come packaged in a much improved box. The change in boxes required a big change in the manufacturing process and has actually added about a month to the process. It now takes about thirteen months to complete a Rolex.

Pete Knight, wrote the following to Rolex after his pioneering flight. “I finally flew on October 3, 1967 to a speed of 4,534 mph and all systems functioned properly with the exception of some local heating damage on the lower ventral. I have been wearing my Rolex GMT-Master for a period of months now and have calibrated it to within a few seconds a day”. Knight had flown the X-15 to a world record speed that still stands over 30 years later and had brought the plane home after temperatures later determined to have been above 3000°) burned a ramjet engine off its pylon and seared a hole into the ventral fin’s leading edge. An airscoop effect channelled hot air into the lower fuselage and damaged the propellant jettison system meaning that Knight eventually had to land the plane 680 kilograms heavier than planned because he could not jettison the residual fuel. If the heat had damaged the craft’s hydraulics, Knight might have had to abandon the plane. Fortunately, that did not happen. Knight landed at Edwards Air Force Base with the plane resembling burnt firewood. It seems amazing that the plane made it and even more so that despite acceleration of more than 3.5G the Rolex GMT Master on his wrist also performed perfectly. The other X-15 pilots also wrote to Rolex about their watches but the story of Pete Knight’s final flight is perhaps the most interesting.

It is worth noting that while Knight wore a Rolex GMT Master on his world record flight he was following in the grand tradition of Edwards Air Force Base, for it was there in 1947 that Chuck Yeager first broke the “Sound Barrier” in a Bell X-1 and did so wearing a Rolex Oyster; the same one he had worn all through World War II.

The wristwatch was now to be a welcome addition to the company’s success.  From that point on, Wilsdorf made and sold watches. He soon decided that the wristwatch should be available for the general public, stylish, affordable, and accurate. He also created a variety of case designs that ranged from sporty to formal or casual. Eventually, the wristwatch became an accessory no well dressed male or female would be without.

When Wilsdorf & Davis, the company that became Rolex, sold their first watches they were delivered with blank dials. It was up to the retailer to put their own name on the dial. Many of these watches had porcelain dials and when they were printed with the dealer’s name it had to be printed on top of the enamel. This meant that any cleaning of the dial would result in the name quickly coming off. Which is why so many of the enamel dials we find today are completely blank; although many have been repainted with the “Rolex” name.

These early watches come from the period between 1905 (when Rolex was founded) and 1919 (when they moved their facility from London to Geneva). During this period the vast majority of their watches were sold in Britain and to a lesser extent in the far flung colonies of the British Empire. Rolex were still a new company and most of the stores had been in business for a long time; so people would have more faith in a watch with the name of “The Goldsmiths Company” or “Asprey” on the dial than in an unheard of company such as Rolex; although (of course) the movements and cases were signed Rolex.

These co-branded early Rolex models are today worth a great deal of money to knowledgeable collectors.

Val Kilmer appeared in Thunderheart in 1992.
He had a Stainless Steel Cosmograph Daytona.Rolex Daytona Also this watch was filmed in the mid 1990’s, in conjunction with the production of the hit movie ” Batman Forever“, starring Val Kilmer as Batman, and directed by Joel Schumacher. The watch was originally “product placed” in the movie by Jaeger LeCoultre as Batman’s personal watch (Val Kilmer), so that the Batman logo could only be seen when Bruce Wayne turned into Batman and “reversed” the watch, revealing the Batman logo

The interesting story is that the idea for the Limited edition watch was brought to Jaeger by a product placement agency while the movie was already in production. Since Jaeger LeCoultre did not have a licensing agreement with Warner Bros, who produced and distributed the movie, JLC was not allowed to profit from the sale of any of the watches. The arrangement with Warner Bros. was that JLC could produce the watch, but never profit financially from direct sales. Thus the watches were used for various national promotions, as well as auction items at fund raisers and charity events. Also, of the 35 pieces produced, only 13 were actually distributed in the USA. Several of the watches were given as prizes in a National sweepstakes as part of the promotional campaign for the film . By now, Wilsdorf and Davis had established itself as a firm specializing in very unique products. Wilsdorf searched from quality, as well as originality. The company had already released the portfolio watch and was also selling traveling locks inside top quality leather cases.

With Wilsdorf, Rolex has progressed in many ways until this day. Starting from pocket watches to high quality waterproof watches, Rolex has grown to become one of the largest watch companies known to man.

Names on the dial are not official and ROLEX recognizes them as standard dials.
These names have really been given to models by collectors.

The name “PAUL NEWMAN” comes from the film CARRERA MEXICANA in 1970.The actor wore a stainless steel cosmograph with an unusual dial for this film.

The watch became available at the same time and enthusiasm among buyers was not strong. Some dealers in the 1970s replaced the “PAUL NEWMAN” with a normal dial.

However in the 1980’s, collectors began to appreciate this model and the “PAUL NEWMAN” started to climb in value. Eventually becoming worth about twice as much as the standard dials.

The “PAUL NEWMAN” dial was produced all years of the COSMOGRAPH watch, from 1963 to 1978, and was made for the American market.
Judging by the number of “PAUL NEWMAN” watches available today it can be assumed that less numbers were made than the standard dial.
The highest density of ROLEX from this time is probably in Italy. This is because in the last fifteen years, the European market has gathered up all the standard and “PAUL NEWMAN” models on the American market, including in South America, where many gold models turned up, sometimes 18 carat gold versions.
