Shopping for a Luxury Watch

People wear watches for many reasons. Some use them for telling time. Others use them for a fashion statement. Before buying a Rolex or other high end watch it’s worth understanding the basics.

1. Understand where the watch was produced. Switzerland is known as the best country for watch making. To protect this element of their economy they have developed criteria for what constitutes a Swiss watch. Only these watches and manufacturers can truly call themselves “Swiss Made”. Before making a major purchase, be sure to get a documented history from the seller about the watch’s origin.

2. Know what makes them work. Mechanical watches use gears and springs, which need periodic servicing. A few companies, including ETA and Valjoux, make good mechanisms that are found in many popular brands. The very best watch makers, like Rolex, build their own mechanisms.
3. About the watch case. Any luxury watch has a screw-on back and screw-down crown (the winding knob) for protection from the elements. Common case materials include stainless steel, gold, silver, platinum and titanium.
4. Check the crystal. The transparent face that covers the watch. Sapphire crystals are the choice for luxury watches, due to their clarity and scratch resistance.
5. Look at other features. Gemstones and precious metals are an elegant if expensive addition to luxury watches. A water-resistant watch is fine for swimming and general use. For diving however be sure to find one that is waterproof and has a depth range sufficient to go as deep as you wish to dive. A chronograph (stopwatch) is important for a sports watch. If travelling make sure to buy a watch with an ability to track time in other time zones.
6. Get a band that fits your needs as well. Luxury watches should have equally luxury band and be very secure. Whether they come with a metal, leather or cloth band of some kind be sure it fits the look of the watch as well as it’s use.

7. Know what to expect. If you are buying a luxury watch it should have the best works and components available. Some of the more well known luxury brands are Rolex, Tag Heuer, Omega, Bulova, Cartier, Jaeger-Le Coultre and many others.

More info:

Luxury watches will tell time well but they do need to be reset every now and then to be exact.

Also understand that self winding watches (which wind with body movement) need to worn regularly if not they will need to be reset.

Don’t get caught up in how many jewels are in the works the workmanship is more important.
